The programme
Terra Mirabilis
Terra Mirabilis is Anima Mundi’s long-term programme dedicated to the natural and cultural heritage of Romania and the Balkan Peninsula.
Through Terra Mirabilis, we step into the simplicity and grandeur of nature and discover the essential role of water and forests in the planet's web of life.
Three directions:
- The path of beauty: thematic journeys through Romania and the Balkans to discover their natural and cultural heritage.
- Our daily water: events, seminars and field observations; education about water's essential role in the planetary ecosystem.
- The forest, cradle of life: walks, field observations and education about forest biodiversity and its deep connection with water; building awareness that the planet's forests sustain human civilisation through the vitality they provide — oxygen, clean water and more — and through their resources.
What we are doing now
As an expression of its commitment to water and forests, and after several years of preparation, Anima Mundi launched the project “Aqua Mater. The essential role of water in the ecosystem” in the Apuseni Mountains.
In October 2026, following a period of field research centred on the commune of Bistra, Anima Mundi opened its first centre for observing and studying water in Sălciua, near Huda lui Papară, an emblematic place in the Apuseni Mountains.
The project is in its first phase of implementation. Twice a month, Anima Mundi organises walks in the Apuseni Mountains, with environmental education for those taking part.
Petrea Ciortan, project coordinator and president of Anima Mundi, is writing the book The Wisdom of Water, which will provide the basis for brochures and leaflets.
On 6 October, Anima Mundi, in partnership with ADI Iti Moții Țara de Piatră, submitted the project “Protecting the Arieș Basin through Community Engagement and Institutional Dialogue” to FDSC and is currently preparing further funding applications.
By the end of the year, Anima Mundi aims to continue organising walks, complete the setting up of its first centre, identify partners, seek funding and prepare information materials.
Aqua Mater continues a series of activities devoted to water and forests: the Celebration of Water, initiated by Petrea Ciortan in 2018 and organised by Anima Mundi since 2020, and thematic walks in the Apuseni, Bucegi, Rarău, Berzunți and Rila Mountains, through the Danube Gorges and around Lakes Durankulak, Bled and Bohinj.
